Helping family members supporting an overwhelmed owner
An elderly person owned an empty property which was making them stressed and anxious. This person spoke to family members, who then contacted our Advice Service for help. The property had been empty for a number of years due to its condition.
The owner found themselves in substantial debt as a result of leaving their home empty, and they were thinking about selling to ease their financial difficulties.
We highlighted the importance of seeking money and debt advice and discussed options for selling the property in its current condition, including at auction. We linked in with support from the local Empty Homes Officer (EHO). The family acted on advice and information we provided to support the owner in selling their property. The reassurance we gave helped take the pressure off the family and the owner, in what had become a crisis situation.
